To the Editor:

It is great to have the opportunity to vote for Mike Schadek for UA City Council.

I got to know Mike when he took a stand for residents who were concerned with the city’s handling of trash privatization. I and many others in our community felt that the city did not act in our best interests, first by ignoring the recommendations of its own task force and then by preventing a citizen vote on the issue when it was placed on the ballot.

Many of us were concerned by these actions, and Mike Schadek worked tirelessly on our behalf to try to right the situation. I learned then that he’s the real deal. He believes in open government and working for the people.

I believe that Mike will be an advocate for the residents of Upper Arlington. He will stand up for what’s right and is committed to involving the community in the decisions that will shape our future.

We would be fortunate to have him working for us as a member of our City Council. He is empathetic and passionate and will bring those much-needed qualities to city government.

Please get out and vote on Tuesday. Vote Schadek.

To the Editor:

If we had choose the most perfect candidate for Upper Arlington City Council, we would pick Mike Schadek.

We first met Mike when he spearheaded the effort to stop the city from privatizing our trash system. Working with him, we learned what a great and capable person he is. Mike is very intelligent and well educated. We were thrilled to learn that he is a college graduate in government, as well as being an attorney.

He understands how a democracy works and realizes that it is the will of the people that makes good government work properly. And he will listen to the people of Upper Arlington.

When we first met Mike Schadek, we liked him right away. He is very personable and has a way about him that lets you know that he cares about what you are thinking and saying. He also has a calm and reassuring demeanor that made us have confidence in him. We also like the way he fights for what he believes, in. We know that Mike Schadek believes in Upper Arlington, its people and its future, and he will fight for us.

Imagine that — right here in our midst, we have a man who is just right to be on UA City Council. Mike Schadek is the right man at the right time.

To the Editor:

I am writing to encourage voters to cast their vote for Mike Schadek Nov. 3.

Mike has demonstrated his commitment to the democratic process and the citizens of the city of Upper Arlington. He will represent us well on Upper Arlington City Council.

He is not afraid to step up when he, along with majority of the citizens of our city, sees a problem. He learned firsthand that community input is not always welcomed by our city leaders. Mike wants his sons to grow up in a community where there is open communication between city leaders and the community as a whole. He also wants them to see democracy in action.

Mike is an attorney, a small business owner and valuable member of our community. He is a person who is great to work with and open to new ideas, and will serve us well as a member of council.

Mike’s willingness to listen to all who care to contact him makes him a good person to represent us on the City Council. He is holding another community forum today, Oct. 28, at Donatos Pizza on Northwest Boulevard.

Bring your concerns and meet Mike. Once you do, I know you will be as convinced as I am that Mike Schadek should have your support on Election Day.

To the Editor:

While reading the article regarding the ruling in federal court and the issuing of the contempt citation against the city of Upper Arlington (Upper Arlington News, Oct. 7), this struck me as another sign of a need for change both in City Council and the attitudes of those who purport to have the community’s best interest at heart.

The decision to destroy the tree, despite differing professional opinions, and the pre-emptive actions supported by the city attorney’s office are quite similar to the process we all experienced during the exceptionally destructive trash privatization, just a much lower scale. It would appear that our esteemed city attorney made a poor decision — based, mind you, on the totally unbiased results of an administrative hearing before the Tree Commission. Her consideration of an appeal, at our expense of course, sounds very similar to the problems created by City Council’s single-mindedness in the past, with the support of their legal counsel during the trash debacle.

Sadly, because an action by the city “does not violate any city ordinance” does not mean it this is responsive and sensitive government. The city uses our money to defend its poor decisionmaking, and we are expected to stand by and just appreciate it.

It is truly time for change and the opportunity presents itself. I would encourage all those who recognize that the paternalistic attitudes need to go, and a vote for Michael Schadek would definitely be a step in the right direction. He has a proven track record of listening to the community.

Replacing those individuals who have supported the unilateral actions of council and staff in the community is a step forward in having a City Council more in touch with the community.

Edward Dagenfield

To the Editor:

I am a seventh grade social studies teacher. One of my objectives is to teach the meaning of indirect or representative democracy.

Sadly, I don’t think several of our current City Council members understand the definition. In my opinion, they have failed more than once to represent the needs, wants and best interests of the people who elected them.

I realized way before the campaign for UA City Council began that my only opportunity to rectify this problem would be to not vote for an incumbent. Upper Arlington needs someone who is going to be responsive to our citizens needs. We need someone like Mike Schadek.

I believe Mike Schadek will be able to bring our local government back to the people of UA and away from those with special interests and personal agendas. He will be and has already been an excellent voice for the majority.

Mike Schadek will bring an energy and creative approach to our community’s issues that has been sorely lacking. He has been one of the most visible and accessible candidates running for a City Council seat, which proves his dedication and commitment. I encourage UA citizens, especially those who are still undecided, to visit Mike Schadek’s Web site, voteschadek.com, to view his entire platform.

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter in support of Mike Schadek.

Of all the candidates I have met and observed during their election/re-election campaigns, Mike Schadek is the only one I believe to be capable of unequivocally standing up for what he believes to be right and voting for the best interests of the residents.

Mike took a stance this past year to fight for the residents’ right to be a part of the political process. He stood up for the residents’ wallets, but ultimately, it was a stand for a citizens’ right to participate in city government.

The current City Council used our tax dollars to go all the way to the Ohio Supreme Court to block residents from exercising their rights. In the end, the city won the legal battle to stop the vote and keep us from having a say in the privatization of trash, but Mike did his research and spoke to everyone who would listen that the estimated savings dollars were not there. Mike was correct.

Mike Schadek took a stance for me and everyone else. That’s a candidate that we need and that deserves to be on City Council. It’s time for a new direction in UA. It’s time for UA residents to have someone sitting at the table ready to do what is in the best interest of the residents. I want Mike to be sitting at that table fighting for me.

I urge everyone to look for themselves at the record of the candidates up for re-election, and the political alignments of the other candidates making their first bids for election, and ask themselves one question: Does their voting record, or their current political alignments, reflect the residents’ best interests?

I know that for Mike Schadek, the answer is “yes.”

David Kershner

To the Editor:

Political platforms aside, here’s what I know about Upper Arlington City Council candidate Mike Schadek.

He’s someone who is driven by a desire to make a difference and do the right thing. He’s compassionate, hardworking and fair.

As a college student, his passion for helping others led him to Cape Town, South Africa, where he met and worked alongside Archbishop Desmond Tutu to improve conditions in South Africa.

He and his family have volunteered regularly with a local soup kitchen for years. He’s actively involved with St. Agatha’s parish and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Development Board. He has stepped forward to work with UA residents on issues impacting the community even in cases where the issues did not affect him or his family directly, but because taking a stand was the right thing to do.

Political platforms are important, but a person’s principles and philosophies on life often shape decisions and the way in which they lead. If you want to elect someone who will be a dedicated public servant and whose decisions are based on what’s right or wrong and not politics as usual, then Mike Schadek should earn your vote. We would be lucky to have him representing us on city government.

To the Editor:

Absentee voting for the general election on Nov. 3 began on Sept. 29. For this election, the Franklin County Board of Elections will not be doing a mass mailing of absentee ballot applications to those who voted absentee in prior elections.

The only way to get an absentee ballot is to go to the BOE Web site at vote.franklincountyohio.gov/absentee/ and print out an application or call them at 614-462-3100. You cannot apply for a ballot online. You must send in your application with an original signature.

Whether residents vote at the polls or absentee, I hope they will vote for Mike Schadek. Mike will find new ways for us to participate in our democracy and to exercise our responsibility as citizens. He will work with council and city employees to promote a new commitment of service to us. He will always remember that he is elected to represent us and will take that privilege seriously.

Times are tough, and everyone knows it. In times like these, we need City Council members with fiscal sense and an understanding of civic responsibility. We need Mike Schadek.

Some may remember Mr. Schadek from the recent fight over trash services here in UA. Simply put, City Council wanted to tax us an additional $30 per year as well as raise trash sticker prices. While the other candidates sat on the sidelines or actively worked to raise our taxes, Mr. Schadek took up the fight for our wallets.

In the end, Mike was not successful, and City Council raised our taxes. But Mike fought. He showed that he knows the value of every tax dollar.

These are the values that we sorely need on UA City Council. Those who do not know Mike can visit voteschadek.com and learn more. Mike has the values of St. Agatha Parish, the character of a fighter and the desire to secure a strong financial future for UA and its citizens.

This Nov. 3, we have a real chance to make our voices heard in the Upper Arlington City Council election. There are seven candidates in the election, and Mike Schadek is my choice for change in this race.

Mike Schadek has proven he will stand up for the residents of Upper Arlington and truly listen to resident concerns. He promises a new approach to city government and his platform is practical, meaningful and will make a difference for UA.

I like the fact he is holding a Community Forum on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Thompson Park Main Shelter. He wants to hear what is on the minds of UA residents and he is willing to listen to the concerns and issues we have. I myself plan to attend the meeting and I urge everyone to come to the event and meet Mike Schadek in person. Listen to why he is running and tell him what is on your mind. This is open to everyone, and I plan to bring my entire family.

It’s time for new ideas and new leadership, and this is our chance to elect a council member who truly cares about us. Please join me in supporting Mike Schadek and check out his Web site at voteschadek.com to view his entire platform.

Recently in UA, issues of growth and priorities have arisen that will affect us all. Many of us have felt left out, misrepresented, even betrayed by the our elected UA City Council representatives. We have not always had the rights afforded by our constitution to participate in these important matters.

No matter how one felt about recent important decisions such as trash privatization, Kingsdale and the rezoning of Tremont, one thing is clear: Some of our City Council members have repeatedly failed to represent the will of the people. Indeed, our City Council has actively resisted our participation, even spending our tax dollars to prevent us from voting.

This November, we will have an opportunity to elect a new City Council representative who will allow us meaningful input and involvement in our local government. Someone who will not only listen and understand, but also act and vote in a manner consistent with the voice of the community.

Mike Schadek recently announced his candidacy for Upper Arlington City Council. His platform is based on three elements that are much needed by our City Council. Those elements are a responsible city government, increased citizen participation and responsible economic development. Mike is genuinely concerned about representing the people in our community and being sure that they have the information necessary to form an opinion, then hearing these opinions and taking them to council meetings.

We now have an opportunity to elect Mike Schadek, who will open up the decision-making process to us and let us participate as is guaranteed by our system of government. It’s time to open the closed doors and be heard. I hope everyone will visit Mike’s Web site at VoteSchadek.com to learn more about his platform and to get involved.

For more information contact:
Tricia Kershner (614)477-6196

UA COUNCIL CANDIDATE MIKE SCHADEK TO HOLD COMMUNITY FORUMS

(UPPER ARLINGTON, OH — September 9, 2009) – Upper Arlington City Council Candidate Mike Schadek announced today that he will hold a series of community forums to hear what’s on the minds of Upper Arlington residents and learn their opinions on a variety of issues facing the community.

The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 30 at 7 p.m. at the Thompson Park Main Shelter House.

“There are a number of key issues facing our community, and it’s critical to the city’s continued success that its residents have real and meaningful input into the policies that will shape Upper Arlington for years to come,” explained Schadek. “It’s my hope that these open forums will be just the first step toward creating a more participatory and responsive city government.”

Schadek has pledged to focus on three key areas if elected to council:

Responsive City Government – accountability, fiscal responsibility, respect for private property, innovative city planning

Increased Citizen Participation – expand city-wide Web site, increase communications between the city and residents, enhance use of existing city resources

Responsible Economic Development – fiscal and ethical responsibility, focus on improving the city infrastructure

He noted that these priorities were developed as the result of hundreds of informal conversations with residents, which ultimately led him to announce his run for Council.

“I’ve heard time and again from residents they want their voices heard and they want the opportunity to learn more about the decisions that impact them and their families,” Schadek said. “That is my commitment to the residents of Upper Arlington, and I hope the community forums are just the start.”

Nine years ago, my wife Debbie and I chose to relocate to Upper Arlington and it was the best decision we have ever made. Upper Arlington is one of those rare places that truly epitomizes the best America has to offer.

After launching a successful business in Southern California, we knew we belonged back in Ohio and UA. As a lawyer and small business owner, we could have chosen any city in Central Ohio in which to raise our family. But there was something about UA that made the decision to relocate here that much easier. UA is a safe community with excellent schools, parks and libraries. The sense of community and civic pride can be found in every neighborhood through the residents that generously donate their time, effort, talent and funds to help make this city great.

While working my way through both the University of Notre Dame and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, I learned the importance of hard work and discipline.

My community service includes the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Development Board, Knights of Columbus, and volunteer work at a local soup kitchen and we are active members at St. Agatha parish. I support the UA Civic Association and have helped raise funds in The Walk and many UA School associated funding efforts. I have also been active in my neighborhood as the Guilford Road 4th of July float chairman and leader of annual street events.

Last year I led the initiative against the privatization of the UA trash system. I felt passionately about the issue and felt compelled to try and do something about it. I learned a great deal about the city and the need for each of us to become actively involved with local decisions. I believe that, as a city, its leaders can do more to make the city even better than it is today. I met some incredible residents and learned to appreciate and love UA even more from the experience. I hope to use the same passion and dedication to represent the residents of Upper Arlington as a City Council member.

My wife Debbie and I have been married for 17 years. Our oldest son Jack is entering fifth grade at Barrington Elementary and our younger son Sam will be a third grader. We lost our daughter Macy to cancer eleven years ago.

There truly is no place we would rather live, and my decision to run for City Council is based on my desire to give back to the city that has welcomed me and my family with open arms.
